The Staffordshire Bull Terrier originated in the nineteenth century in Staffordshire, England. Breeders developed it from a combination of old-style Bulldog used for Bull-baiting and agile, game, smooth-coated terriers to produce a breed with bulldog tenacity and terrier nimbleness. Known as the Bull and Terrier, Half and Half, or Bulldog Terrier, handlers used them for pit sports and dogfighting until authorities banned these activities in 1836. Today, the Staffy is among England’s most popular breeds, though it is less common in the United States.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breed Standard
The Staffy is a healthy, muscular, stocky dog, powerful but equally agile and graceful. It possesses a short, slightly sloping back, a deep, broad chest; strong legs with round bone; and a short, low-set, tapered tail. The head is full with very pronounced cheek muscles, sharp jaws, and a black nose. The ears are cropped or uncropped but cannot be drop. The eyes are dark, round, and full set.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Temperament
Staffy’s are fierce, versatile, all-purpose dogs that require plenty of exercises as well as regular and constant positive training. High-spirited, impulsive, and exceptionally strong for their size, Stafford’s need basic obedience training. They have powerful jaws.
