The Staffordshire Bull Terrier originated in the nineteenth century in Staffordshire, England. Breeders developed it from a combination of old-style Bulldog used for Bull-baiting and agile, game, smooth-coated terriers to produce a breed with bulldog tenacity and terrier nimbleness. Known as the Bull and Terrier, Half and Half, or Bulldog Terrier, handlers used them for pit sports and dogfighting until authorities banned these activities in 1836. Today, the Staffy is among England’s most popular breeds, though it is less common in the United States.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Temperament

Staffy’s are fierce, versatile, all-purpose dogs that require plenty of exercises as well as regular and constant positive training. High-spirited, impulsive, and exceptionally strong for their size, Stafford’s need basic obedience training. They have powerful jaws. Therefore, a lack of exercise and supervision will lead to destructive chewing. Owners have to enforce boundaries and take a patient approach to training.

How to train staffordshire bull terrier

This dog is a sensitive, people-oriented breed that best responds to praise and rewards. Strict training means are unlikely to succeed and can ruin the breed’s character. Stafford’s have a strong defensive instinct and make excellent watchdogs, especially the female Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Some will live peaceably with other animals. However, this varies within the breed, and owners should be prepared to supervise. In addition, Stafford’s are sensitive to weather extremes.

Their love of playing games is matched only by their need for human companionship. Also, they are naturally friendly to strangers. They do exceptionally well with children; although generally mild, some can be rowdy. In England, the Staffy is called the Nanny Dog, thanks to their willingness and aptitude to undertake the role of a child’s nursemaid. Some can be strongminded. Even though it doesn’t regularly look for a fight, it is bold and persistent.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Price

Mostly, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier cost is not going to be cheap. They’re highly-priced dogs and can go anywhere between 1500 dollars and 2000 dollars. However, according to Staffy owners, the money is well worth it. They are loyal dogs that take protecting their family seriously. England is where you will find the most breeders; however, you also have breeders in America and Canada.

If the price tag is just too steep, you can consider Staffordshire Bull Terrier adoption. You will save money and save a deserving rescue canine companion as well. Find more information about adoptions and rescues on the parent club website.
